Most of the modern units can be taken to the site by one person. Most so called dredges are floating sluice box with suction pump to pull up gold bearing sands from underwater. The modern gold dredge is the same concept but on a much smaller scale. Gold then settles to the bottom of the pan, or into the bottom of the riffles of the sluice box. Each method involves washing sand, gravel and dirt in water. The original methods to perform placer mining involved gold panning, sluice boxes, and rockers. The concept is that the gold in sand or soil will settle to the bottom because gold is heavy/dense, and dirt, sand and rock will wash away, leaving the gold behind. Making swirls upon swirls. The basic concept of dredging gold in placer mining has not changed since antiquity. The gravel is laid out behind the boom like frosting out of a hand beater. The waste rock is sent up a conveyor through a long aft-mounted boom. Inside the dredge, a rotating cylinder called a trammel separates the fine gold-bearing sand from rocks and gravel. Using large buckets on a continuous chain much like a giant chain saw, river gravel is pulled into the dredge. Gold dredges are floating ore processing plants. The Middle Fork of the South Platte River, however, had never been mined.
